A Costco Run

Leg of Lamb

I made a run to Costco on Tuesday. I love going there — especially since I’m not the one with the membership. The time has gone by in which dropping $65 for a membership to a big box grocery (and more) store that I rarely go to would have been a no-brainer. Pull out the credit card, slide it through the Point of Sale machine and sign when asked. Done. Membership to shop in an enormous store with enormous packages of everyday items while walking past items no one knows, but which are so enticing just because they are in a store that supposedly offers products at a discounted price. Just the idea that we’re saving money is often enough to convince us to throw one in the cart.

Ground Lamb

So, what did I purchase this time? Among other things — lamb. Lamb and more lamb. Well, not really, but I did pick up a small boneless leg with plans to coax it out of it’s snug “girdle” so that I could cut some of it into cubes for curry and until this morning I hadn’t given a thought to grinding any of it, but something struck me and I had a sudden craving for Kofta. Or Kefta or Kufteh … or any other transliteration that may be out there.

Kofta

Basically, Kofta is what we would call a meatball.

When I lived in India I was invited to the … you know what? I’m going to write this story out on the new Thexpatfiles site, so stay tuned for that fun story. Suffice it to say that the story contains Kofta that looked just like the meatballs in the photo behind this link — Kashmiri kofta

Kofta Ready for the Grill

The kofta were as big as my brain — similar in size to the Honeycrisp apples I dipped in caramel and chocolate last week.

Today’s kofta was not quite so Land of the Giants sized, however. I was far more restrained. And the texture was different. So was the sauce. And the shape of mine were different. The cooking method was nowhere simliar either. Ok, so my kofta were nothing like the version I had that were hand-carried down from Kashmir, but it’s ok, because they were GREAT!

Finished Kofta

I think mine were more like the Lebanese version. I found a recipe for the sauce, and it was delicious also, although not like what I’d had in the small Lebanese restaurant on Field’s Ave. near the office in the Philippines. I have a feeling it may be the memory of the experience of great food in that restaurant that I was remembering more than the sauce. Either way, it was a really fabulous lunch today.

Grilled Kofta

And I have more lamb in my future! There’s the rest of that leg and the cubed meat. Stay tuned for more lambtastic dishes in future blog posts.

In 2007 my career with a large, but shrinking high tech Fortune 50 \"left me,\" leaving a void in my life. While lamenting the loss and flying around the world looking for a new career to get married to, I discovered a way to use a familiar outlet during tough times -- writing. My blog-writing morphed into writing about my favorite past time -- Food! I purchase food, sell food, make food, watch food being made, broadcast meal preparation, photograph and blog about food. Like I said; Food! To change this standard text, you have to enter some information about your self in the Dashboard -> Users -> Your Profile box.
