When Life Gives You Lemons…

Make Lemonade!

And that’s just what I did.

New Meyer Lemon Crop

My parents sent another box of Meyer Lemons from their bountiful tree. A few of them are as big as my head! Well, maybe not quite that large, but as big as an orange.

And for those of you that avoid the less than perfectly round, smooth-skinned, yellow lemon, you’re doing yourself a disservice. These lemons are as good BETTER than the perfectly shaped, bright yellow lemons you find at your local brand name grocery store.

And the flavor? Well, it simply just does not compare. I know there are some spots and some are shaped more like a pear. One or two had split skins, but what was inside was perfectly ripe, juicy and had the sweet-tart flavor that a Meyer Lemon is known for. These lemons are totally organic. My parents aren’t farmers. They don’t have an elaborate stand of lemon trees. This wonderful crop comes from the one tree they planted a few years ago and it’s finally bearing a bounty of fruit.

I took out my citrus juicer and got to work making juice. Meanwhile, I had a pot of water and sugar on the stove to make a simple syrup. It’s equal parts sugar and water heated until the sugar dissolves.

Sparkling Lemonade

The result? A thirst-quenching drink. I harvested a small pinch of fresh mint and had a great citrus drink for breakfast this morning.

Lemonade

So, the lemonade is wonderful — what should I make next? Lemon bars are definitely on the list as is a grilled lemon to go with my lamb for lunch this afternoon, but I’m going to have to do some major surfing to find a stack of recipes because mom reports that she expects to get lemons all year long. Wow! I had no idea. Exciting.

I just got a great idea for lunch! I have to run to the kitchen to whip it up. Want a hint? It’s a savory recipe, not for dessert.

Bye!

I’ve heard about the meyer lemons but was never lucky enough to try them – you are so lucky to have your parents send you so many of them! I have no idea where to find them in Sydney.

I’m sitting here jealous of those beautiful amazing meyer lemons. I don’t even know what a lemon tree looks like as I live much too close to the Canadian boarder.

Your parents are super cool, and so is your lemon drink!!

I need to move South.

@Laura, thanks for stopping by. Meyer Lemons are sweeter than regular lemons and have a thinner skin. The lemons we get in the market these days are so expensive and the skin is ridiculously thick, but these lemons are different. It’s a shame you can’t get them where you are.
